Install WCode
WCode is Wrenchit's coding agent. It runs in a terminal on macOS and Linux, as a desktop app on Windows and macOS, and in the browser at ai.wrenchit.net.
macOS and Linux
Run the installer in a terminal:
curl -fsSL https://ai.wrenchit.net/install | bash
The script detects your OS and architecture (arm64 or x64), downloads the current build, verifies its SHA-512 checksum with openssl when it is installed, and installs two commands into ~/.wrenchitcode/bin:
wrenchitcode— the full command name.wcode— a short alias for the same binary.
The installer adds that directory to your shell profile unless you tell it not to. Open a new terminal afterwards, or source your profile, so the command is found.
wcode --version
A version number means the install worked. If you see command not found, see Troubleshooting.
Requirements. bash and curl. Install openssl as well so the download can be checksum-verified; on a minimal Linux image, apt install openssl or your distribution's equivalent. Without openssl the installer prints a warning and skips the check, so a minimal image should not skip it.
Installer options
The installer accepts flags after bash -s --:
curl -fsSL https://ai.wrenchit.net/install | bash -s -- --channel beta
| Flag | What it does |
|---|---|
--channel <name> | Installs latest (default), beta or dev. Use the same channel when you update. |
--dir <path> | Installs into this directory instead of ~/.wrenchitcode/bin. |
--no-modify-path | Skips the shell-profile edit. You add the install directory to PATH yourself. |
Release channels move independently. latest is the stable build, beta gets changes before stable, and dev is the newest and least tested. Pick one channel and stay on it unless you are deliberately testing a release.
Windows
Use the desktop app on Windows. Download it from console.wrenchit.net, run the installer, and sign in with your Wrenchit account. The desktop app and the CLI share the same account and workspace.
If you work in WSL, install the Linux build inside the WSL distribution with the command above rather than running the Windows binary from WSL.
First run
-
Open a project directory
Change into the repository you want to work on. WCode reads the project from the directory you start it in.
cd ~/code/my-project wcode -
Sign in
Sign in with the same Wrenchit account you use for Console. If your workspace uses single sign-on, the browser flow handles it.
-
Approve the workspace
WCode asks before it reads or writes outside the directory you started it in. Approve the project directory, not your home directory.
-
Ask for one small change
Start with something you can check, for example: "Add a README section that explains how to run the tests." Review the diff before you accept it.
Prefer the browser? ai.wrenchit.net runs WCode without a local install. Use it when you are on a machine where you cannot install software. The CLI is still the better fit for work that needs your local toolchain, test runner or git credentials.
Update and uninstall
Re-run the install command to update. It replaces the binary in place and keeps your configuration and sign-in.
curl -fsSL https://ai.wrenchit.net/install | bash
To uninstall, delete the install directory and remove the line the installer added to your shell profile:
rm -rf ~/.wrenchitcode
Your projects are not stored there; only the binary and its configuration are removed.
Troubleshooting
wcode: command not found
The install directory is not on your PATH. Open a new terminal first. If it still fails, add this to ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc and restart the shell:
export PATH="$HOME/.wrenchitcode/bin:$PATH"
The installer warns that it skipped the checksum
That means openssl was not found on PATH. Install it and run the command again. If the script instead reports checksum mismatch, the download is corrupt or was tampered with; do not run that binary, and download again.
The download fails behind a proxy
curl reads HTTPS_PROXY from your environment. Set it for the install command if your network requires a proxy, and check that the proxy allows ai.wrenchit.net.
Sign-in opens the wrong account
Sign out in Console, then start wcode again. The CLI uses the browser session for the account you last used.
